Japanese Flowering Apricot

Prunus mume –
Japanese Flowering Apricot
The ume is a favorite of the Japanese for bonsai and rightly so.  Unlike other members of the flowering cherry family it is much less likely to die back when severely pruned.  Its fruits are small.  Its flower is small and very fragrant, and they come in many different colors.  This one is white with a very slight pink blush.
Hardy up into zone 6, it is also not very fussy about soil (likes well drained loam best), and with only a few pests,  but not salt tolerant.

It is also long lived.  Many ume bonsai specimens in Japan are
well over a century in age, and fast growing when young.

Old Trident Maple

The trident maple is one of the strongest looking and easily worked material for bonsai.  It makes fine shohin and mame material, while making for some of the most powerful, and at the same time, most graceful large trunked material for bonsai.
With its ease and speed of scar healing (on a big trunk,  large 3+” wounds heal within a year), and the resultant smooth gray bark, often without apparent marks, make for a very natural tree effect on every trunk.
Small leaves, starting out bright red, and which turn a rich red color again in the fall, make for a beautiful effect through much of the year.  And if that isn’t enough to delight any bonsai enthusiast’s heart, consider the ease with which a true, full plate of roots can be developed. Early examples often actually display a complete dinner plate effect, as though the roots had “flowed” over the ground – an effect hardly ever found in any other temperate zone tree.
To top it all off, its speed of growth lets you develop any size plant without decades of work, yet it remains easily trainable and able to be kept in control.

Ficus Salicaria

Bonsai Tree

There are hundreds of species, most of them tropical and evergreen, although some are deciduous. Many varieties are natural dwarfs. Ficus is one of the most popular trees for indoor Bonsai.

With the ease of developing  roots: surface roots and aerial roots, it provides great opportunity for exciting tropical effects of bonsai.

We are selling these beautiful trees in Bonsai Pots, and will be shipped as seen in the photos wrapped in burlap. Contact us for more information or other pictures. We want you to have one of these in your Bonsai Collection.

Japanese Garden Juniper

The Japanese garden juniper is among the best of all materials to be made into cascading evergreen bonsai. The leaves stay short and fairly soft needles of a rich gray green color, and likes rich soil but not excessive moisture.
Always pliant and easy to bend and to wire, and prune/candle pinch, this plant shares with others some susceptibility to mites but not nearly as much as most other junipers. As far as disease in general, it is much less damageable.

Although known, throughout  most of the horticultural world, as J. procumbens nana, it is rather properly known as J. squamata prostrata.
Whatever we call it, it is one of the best materials for many styles, and can often be shaped into a graceful upright “literati” style by turning it upright and burying the strong curving base of the trunk  while it develops more roots in the new shape. It is also excellent for groves and raft style bonsai

Juniperus Chinensis

Sylvestris Foemina

The foemina juniper is a wonderful strong looking tree for powerful formal upright tree forms.  It is also excellent for forest plantings.

An excellent example of a foemina forest planting is the masterpiece, a large forest "Goshin", done by the great master John Yoshio Naka.  It is now on permanent display in the national bonsai collection at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C.

Juniperus davurica

‘Parsonii’

A ground hugging juniper with an attractive blue green foliage.  Very tolerant of acid to slightly alkaline soils, and drought, and a very high salt tolerance.  Will tolerate partial shade but grows best in full sun. The proper name is confused but most likely Juniperus x Davurica Parsonii.  As with all junipers it is susceptible to mites but less so than most.
It has a tendency, when changing growth direction, to make graceful rounded curves – unlike others like the San Jose which tends to make quick angular turns.

Bonsai Pot

Up for auction is a pot from the kiln of Clif Pottberg, made
between 35 and 40 years ago, and made from his own recipes of unique clay bodies.

It’s a simple pot, fired to cone 10.  16.5 inches long with good drainage.   Most of these pots have been sold to collectors, but a few remain.
The mark of "RN" was what his company was named at the time, "RN Products".  These pots and other high fired stoneware were  sold as part of a line of bonsai products which included a number of other unique and individual products as well.
