Old Trident Maples
These trident maples are one of the strongest looking and easily worked material for bonsai. They make fine shohin and mame material, while making for some of the most powerful, and at the same time, most graceful large trunked material for bonsai.
With its ease and speed of scar healing (on a big trunk, large 3+” wounds heal within a year), and the resultant smooth gray bark, often without apparent marks, make for a very natural tree effect on every trunk.
Small leaves, starting out bright red, and which turn a rich red color again in the fall, make for a beautiful effect through much of the year. And if that isn’t enough to delight any bonsai enthusiast’s heart, consider the ease with which a true, full plate of roots can be developed. Early examples often actually display a complete dinner plate effect, as though the roots had “flowed” over the ground – an effect hardly ever found in any other temperate zone tree.
To top it all off, its speed of growth lets you develop any size plant without decades of work, yet it remains easily trainable and able to be kept in control.
